This installation is inspired by the surrealist work of Philippe Starck, Alice in Wonderland. Like the author, I think of recreating the space imagined by Philippe Starck, within another space, the Hotel, which in turn is within my space, another parallel reality.

When curator Carol Demian invited me to hold a solo exhibition at La Merced Chapel in Miami, I found in that space the opportunity to honor my mother with some of my artwork that I consider sacred.
I. The Feathers, given to me by Kosirewe, a Shaman from the Amazon rainforest ín Venezuela, and used by Yanomami men as adornment during theír ritual ceremonies.
II.Two of my marble books with the following inscriptions:
Book1Book I: Are you worth more dead or alive?
Book1Book II: Life= Awareness, Happiness, Pain, Love, Change…Being
III. The sculpture Dreams are made of light, which I placed close to the altar.
IV. The head of a woman submerged in a pillow. I called her Martyr, for all the women that bravely stand to defend and to protect their rights everywhere in the world, even under the worst of circumstances.

Mirror, Mirror on the wall is a collage of works from different years connected to a video called Dream Lips (2007). It shows an innocent game like putting sticky pouty lips on the faces of a girl and her mother, when in reality it is about the obsession with achieving physical ideals that girls imitate from an early age.

A woman’s voice is heard talking about the desire of having the perfect family,  to be forever young and to live an isolated, perfect life, living dreams that go nowhere. The titles of the works are constantly repeated as part of the monologue: I don’t want anything from anybody, ain’t that much to take (from Bob Dylan’s lyrics) “Where you lay your head I saw your soul, mirror, mirror of the wall who is the fairest of all, pleasure, My eyes…”

Subtle sounds of the wind moving the leaves of trees and chirping of birds, recreate, in this kind of small capsule, the sensation of suspension and lightness.
